Helping A Disabled Single Mother Repair Her Hurricane-damaged Home

This year, the Order of Malta will be working to repair the hurricane-damaged home of Theresa Llopis. The home has been in Theresa’s family since 1953. Theresa grew up there with her three siblings, and then raised her four children in the house.

In 2002, Theresa became disabled with debilitating arthritis in her back and could no longer work. Theresa and her sister Betty cared for each other in the house, until they lost everything in Hurricanes Katrina and Rita. They lived in a trailer for two years, but ...

Rebuilding Together: Order Of Malta Home Repair Program

We need three teams of 15-20 volunteer workers for each of the weeks listed below. Volunteers will arrive on Sunday afternoon, and check into the New Orleans Marriott on Canal Street.

The remaining work weeks are:

Special Projects

Malta Park— Volunteers attend weekday Mass at 3:45 with the residents or join them for Happy Hour on Tuesdays at 1:45 p.m. Eucharistic Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament is on Tuesdays and Saturdays from 9 to 10 a.m.

St. Vincent de Paul Community Pharmacy - Members contribute food and clothing to this center which distributes prescription drugs (many of which are provided by the Order) to the homeless and the needy.

Cristo Sana Medical Mission to Nicaragua – Several members of the Order travel to Nicaragua each year to participate as volunteers on this one-week medical mission. Dr. Frank Schmidt and Dr. Robert Cangelosi are the SMOM coordinators.

About

There are 47 members of the Federal Association living in Louisiana. The largest concentration is in the New Orleans area. The New Orleans Knights and Dames have been the primary sponsors of three assisted living facilities – Malta Park and Malta Square at Sacred Heart, and Malta Court at Holy Angels. All three are state-of-the-art residences for low-income elderly.

Monthly Mass

First Friday Mass and Breakfast - Mass is celebrated at 8:00 a.m. at Malta Park (1100 Aline Street). Daily Mass during Advent and Lent at 3:45 p.m. Mass is followed with an hour of hospitality and visitation with the residents of Malta Park.
