Members of the Order of Malta - Oklahoma City along with members of the  Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulchre OKC Region, participated in the second annual Holy Orders' Dinner. Co-hosted by Archbishop Paul S. Coakley , nearly 100 Knights and Dames joined together in breaking bread in support of the Holy Family Hospital and to hear an address by former US Ambassador to the Holy See Francis Rooney. Ambassador Rooney spoke about the diplomatic service of the Holy See, in particular the critical role the unique relationship between the United States and the Holy See plays around the world.

Mass of Investiture

The annual formal Mass of Investiture of new members is typically held at the Cathedral of Saint Matthew in the Archdiocese of Washington DC but was not held last Fall as a result of the Coronavirus pandemic.  Instead, on Friday, March 12, 2021, Archbishop Paul Coakley of Oklahoma City was the principal celebrant for a Mass of Investiture held at Christ the King parish for the Class of 2020.

Fra' Thomas Mulligan, a religious brother, President; Crag Jarchow, Vice President; and Patrick Monaghan, Hospitaller of the Federal Association of the Order of Malta; were in Oklahoma City to oversee the investiture of new members.

Five members of the Class of 2020, Benjamin Michael Barresi of Saint Eugene parish, David Truman Bernstein of Saint John the Baptist parish, Michael Power Rainbolt of Saint Eugene parish, Jason Allen Reese of Christ the King parish and Daniel Ian Smith of Christ the King parish became Knights of Magistral Grace of the Order of Malta. A Knight of Magistral Grace is member of the Third Class.

Following the Investiture Mass, 80 members, candidates and guests attended a gala dinner at the new Omni, Oklahoma City.  The Order of Malta event was the first plated dinner hosted by the hotel.

Coats for the Homeless

The Order of Malta Australian Association created Coats for the Homeless to help alleviate the suffering of homeless men and women in cities across the country. The Oklahoma City Coats for the Homeless program seeks to provide a direct and meaningful benefit to the homeless population not only in Oklahoma City, but beyond. This is not a coat collection and distribution program.  Rather, the coat is specifically designed for the needs of the homeless living on the street.

Members of the Order of Malta consulted the homeless about what they wanted and needed in a coat. Based on feedback, coats are black, three-quarter length with a hood, quilted and warm, waterproof, comfortable and portable. The color is meant to be inconspicuous, as the homeless indicated their greatest fear is being assaulted in alleys and parks. Secret internal pockets hold valuables. The coats are specifically designed for mobility, allowing for easy movement in an emergency, and can be easily layered in various seasons. Please see our explanatory video to see the coats and learn about its design: https://vimeo.com/495556517.

The specially designed coats are manufactured abroad and shipped to Oklahoma City by sea freight container. In addition to local distribution by members, partner agencies will help with distributing coats to local homeless populations. Coats are also available to there Hospitaller Regions of the Order throughout the United States. Hospitallers with interest should contact the us at smomokc@gmail.com.

The first order of coats are scheduled to arrive in the first quarter of 2021. Because the coats are shipped via sea freight to the United States, we are required to utilize a 20’ shipping container. The container holds 3,360 coats and we have made a full order of this amount. The budget for manufacturing, import duties, shipping and other expenses is approximately $25 per coat.

The 2020 Annual SMOM - OKC Retreat

Nearly two dozen hospitallers, candidates, and spouses joined Bishop Lopes, along with special guests Archbishop Paul Coakley and Bishop James Conley.
