Federal Association Grant Funds Baltimore Mission Helpers Center

(l-r) Mary Hosford, DM co-sponsor of the grant request, Sister Loretta Cornell, President of the Mission Helpers of the Sacred Heart, Loretto Kane, DM new Regional Hospitaller of Baltimore, and Patrick Monaghan, KM Federal Association Board Member and former Regional Hospitaller and co-sponsor of the grant request.

Baltimore region members gathered to present a $25,000 grant check to the President of the Mission Helpers of the Sacred Heart, Sister Loretta Cornell, MHSH. The Grant, will be used to fund improvements to Mission Helper Center, the building housing the retired Sisters of the Order. In a community where the median age is 75, where some use wheelchairs or walkers, many sisters have found it difficult to maneuver the heavy doors of the convent. The grant will help fund automatic door openers on interior doors accessing hallways, dining area, chapels, sitting and reading rooms, and residential area.. Although the grant covers the cost of most of the renovation, a matching gift from a donor will cover the balance. This is the second Grant approved for the retirement center

Baltimore members and the Mission Helper Sisters have warmly embraced each other. While members of the Order volunteer to help improve the physical condition of the Center with hands-on work days and Grant money, the Sisters have in turn opened their meeting rooms and chapel for the Baltimore region’s monthly gatherings. Many of the retired Sisters have also joined area members cooking and serving at My Sister's Place and Sarah's Hope Shelters in Baltimore city. The Order of Malta and the Mission Helpers have become true sisters in their combined objective in serving the sick and the poor. – Mary Hosford, DM, Baltimore

On Jan 7th, in celebration of the Vigil of Epiphany, 40 knights, dames, spouses, candidates, those in formation and auxiliary of the Chicago and Midwest Region attended the annual Day of Recollection presented by Rev Richard Fragomeni. The theme was Interior Participation in the Celebration, specifically, reflections on Pope Benedict XVI's words on the need for mystagogical catechesis or making one's interior dispositions correspond to the gestures and words of the liturgy. Being conscious of the new translation, symbolism and metaphors and prayers of the Mass assist the faithful to enter more deeply into the mystery being celebrated.

Lunch was a chance to deepen the spirit of this community and at the end of the day we closed with Mass where music was provided by members of the William Ferris Chorale who sang Pietro Alessandro Yon's Mass of the Shepherds. - Fra’ Thomas Mulligan, Chicago
