ORDER OF MALTA MOMENT

POPE FRANCIS RECEIVES STAFF OF THE ORDER OF MALTA HOSPITAL

Fra' Matthew Festing, Grand Master with Pope Francis at the Vatican

While meeting with Pope Francis, the Grand Master spoke of the activities of the Order of Malta, underlining the ancient tradition of assistance to the poor and the sick.

Pope Francis told those present to continue their work at the Hospital with courage and hope.

The Holy Father also strongly emphasized that today's crisis is not so much a question of economics as it is of morality. "The subsequent cutting of resources is offensive to human life and threatens to regard life as a mere object of exchange," the Holy Father explained.

The Holy Father called on the participants to consider their neighbor as the "Body of Christ."

The director of the Hospital of the Order of Malta, Tiziana Frittelli, thanked the Holy Father for the strong moral support he has shown towards healthcare in general and especially to Catholic institutions, giving encouragement to continue on the mission of caring for the weak and defenseless.

from REGULATIONS AND COMMENTARY

Membership in the Order of Malta Regulations and Commentary

Membership in the Order of Malta: REGULATIONS AND COMMENTARY is a beautiful book which explains the Order and our role as members of the Order. The Prince and Grand Master Fra’ Matthew Festing reminds us that we need to read and reread the Rule of the Order frequently. He comments that in referring to it often we are following “the way of monasteries of the Benedictine tradition where an extract from the Rule of St Benedict is read every day in choir.” This Rule of the Order helps us in perfecting our lives as followers of Christ and as members of our Order.

Each month, Kate Signorelli will provide a few sentences from that Rule in the Order of Malta Moment with a reference to the publication. All members should have a copy of REGULATIONS AND COMMENTARY, but it is also located on the Federal Association’s website.

Members of all three Classes are called to live and act as a "family". As the first Christians they should be identified by "how they love one another"(86). They should avoid disputes among themselves, nor speak ill of one another, and live in unity.

900 YEARS OF FAITH IN ACTION: 1113-2013, THE BULL OF PASCAL II

Hill Museum & Manuscript Library Exhibition

The Malta Study Center at the Hill Museum & Manuscript Library is commemorating the 900th anniversary of papal recognition of the Sovereign Military Hospitaller Order of St. John of Jerusalem of Rhodes and Malta with an exhibit entitled “900 Years of Faith in Action: 1113-2013, The Bull of Pascal II.” It will be on display May 25 to July 7 at the Basilica of Saint Mary, 88 N. 17th St., Minneapolis.

WHAT IT MEANS TO CARE

Celebrating 900 years of the Order of Malta, the Federal Association members presented a comprehensive capsule of its worldwide activities on behalf of the sick and suffering at the Annual Conference of the University of Chicago's Institute for Religion and Medicine on May 28-30. A one-and-a-half hour panel presentation featured care of the sick over the 900 years of the Order's history and covered the spectrum of medical care, international relief, and our beloved annual pilgrimages to Lourdes.

Fra' Thomas Mulligan opened the presentation with a precise and succinct description of the Order's history, especially the "birth" of our Order in the realm of medical care. Using remarkable iconography our President, Geoff Gamble, followed with an eloquent portrait of the Order's preferential focus on medical care through the centuries and in its many current international ventures. Dr. Jacek Mostwin concluded the session with profound and reflective insights based on his past experience directing the Medical Committee of the Federal Association. Dr. Edgardo Yordan served to moderate the presentation.
