Order of Malta Moment

December 23, 2011

Christmas Greetings!

Msgr. Edward J. Dillon
Magistral Chaplain, Atlanta

Dear Knights, Dames and friends of the Order of Malta:

Christmas is a time of year when the spirit of the Gospel is tangible. People are extraordinarily generous to those in need so that they, too, receive some of the joy of the season. It infects folks who, for the rest of the year, don’t even see the needy. So, while we’re celebrating the birth of Christ, we also have an opportunity to develop at least a dim idea (to steal a notion from St. Paul) of what our world would look like if everyone took the message of the gospel seriously and tried to live it.

For those associated with the Order of Malta a similar opportunity comes along with the Lourdes Pilgrimage, a week of our year when we have a chance to see people actually inconveniencing themselves to take care of the sick. That is certainly a time of grace; and for those privileged to witness it and be part of it, an important opportunity to see the Gospel being lived.

With opportunities like that, how can we not rejoice in the birth of Jesus? And in his bringing to our world the message that God loves us.

Allow me to wish all of you a happy, restful and spiritually revitalizing Christmas season.
