REGIONAL REPORT - ROOM IN THE INN FOR CHARLOTTE'S HOMELESS

Charlotte volunteers join hands in prayer.

In the heart of Charlotte’s business and cultural hub known as “Uptown” you will find St. Peter’s Catholic Church. In concert with over 100 other congregations in the greater Charlotte area, St. Peter’s partners with the Urban Ministry Center to provide overnight accommodations for more than 1,500 homeless people during the four cold-weather months.

Initiated under the leadership of the late Harry Grim, our first Hospitaller, and carried on by Dr. Don Joyce and now Jerry Schmitt, this Room In The Inn program has become a core commitment of the Charlotte Region for the past fifteen years. Click here to read more –

DAY OF REFLECTION STRESSES BONDS BETWEEN THOSE IN AND OUT OF PRISON

Dahlgren Chapel, Georgetown University

“Be mindful of those in prison as though you were in prison with them.”
This verse from the Letter to the Hebrews set the theme as 50 members of the Order and friends attended the Federal Association’s annual Spring Day of Reflection in Washington, DC, on Saturday, April 20.

Speakers included Rev. Michael Bryant, founder of Prison Outreach Ministry; Dr. Janelle Goetcheus, Chief Medical Officer of Unity Healthcare, which provides care for the homeless and poor of Washington, DC ; and two special guests, Ms. Diane Twyman and Mr. Samuel Buggs, both ex-offenders. WOUNDED WARRIORS LUNCH AT WALTER REED

Left to right : Larry and Tim Demaree, candidate Marguerite Baxter, Naval Academy volunteers, Michael von Maltzahn and Peter Guen of the Johanniter Order.

Order of Malta Washington area Knights, Dames and Candidates, joined by the Johanniter Order, hosted a luncheon on May 5 at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center for the Wounded Warriors, families and staff in the trauma ward.

These patients are days away from injury and their families are recently arrived and dislocated. We served about 150 in the hospital a menu of sandwiches, pasta and potato salads, fruit and the famous, and always appreciated, Georgetown Cupcakes.

Volunteers and Warriors all enjoyed rewarding interactions and we are developing relationships where we are able to offer assistance in other ways. Food service on the weekends for the supporting families and staff is very limited, so our menu on Sunday was a welcome respite. Click here to read more -
