Richmond Collaborates in 34th World Day of the Sick Mass

On Sunday, February 8th, the Diocese of Richmond celebrated a special Mass for the World Day of the Sick.  The Richmond Region of the Order of Malta collaborated with Bishop Barry Knestout (Conventual Chaplain ad honorem) and the Diocese to plan for and participate in this special liturgy.  The Mass was concelebrated by Fr. Michael Boehling, Vicar General of the Diocese (Associate Chaplain) and Fr. Tony Marques, Rector of the Cathedral of the Sacred Heart.

The Knights and Dames of the Order were pleased to assist the ushers in greeting the faithful, escorting individuals as needed to the pews, to deliver the readings, and to bear the gifts at the offertory.  Our overall participation helped project the mission, commitment, and dedication of the Order of Malta to aid the sick.  Bishop Knestout kindly spoke about the Order of Malta and our charisms in his excellent homily.

After Mass, parishioners enjoyed a special reception offered by the Knights and Dames of the Region.  In addition to the delicious repast, the Region provided information about the Order of Malta, and offered holy cards of Our Lady of Lourdes, St. Bernadette medals, and small vials of Lourdes Water.

It was a honor and a joy for the Richmond Region Mass to help the Diocese to celebrate this liturgy, initiated by Pope Saint John Paul II 34 years ago, to focus the faithful of Mother Church on the needs of those who are sick and in need of healing, and how we can all participate in prayer for them.
